I want to pose the age old question - PC or Mac.

More specifcally, for photo editing etc. I hve heard the pro photographers prefer Mac, but I have only used PC before, so I am a bit hesitant to change. Any info is appreciated.

Macs:

* SO much easier to use
* Run WAY better for hard core editing work (I currently have the full Adobe Creative Suite on my MacBook - but I would suggest that if you're looking at that kind of full on editing, you invest in a proper desktop set up or a macbook pro)
* Run WAY better generally
* What few compatibility issues there used to be with PC are now pretty much totally gone
* Practically Virus resistant
* Are much prettier than PCs
* I often hear 'whinge whinge whinge ... Macs are so EXPENSIVE' - but they really cost about the same as a COMPARABLE PC. Sure, you can pick up a PC for under a grand ... but what kind of computer is that going to be? Apple doesn't do low-end machines, which is why you can't pick up anything that cheap. All of their computers are high quality, with amazing lasting power ... how amazing? I bought my old Imac in 2001. I used it up until the start of last year and the only reason I upgraded was because I figured ... it's been 6 years ... I DESERVE a new computer!

Meanwhile, the Imac's new home is with a graphic designer who is still using her as her principal business machine.

I have NEVER upgraded that Imac in any way, shape or form (minus software updates, of course - no hardware updates). I have NEVER had to take it in to be serviced.

Find me a PC that can do THAT!

* Oh yeah ... and they become a member of the family. I'm yet to meet a Mac owner who isn't emotionally attached to their computer ... and yet to meet a PC owner who is ...

I've introduced several people to Apple over the years (including a computer programmer!) - not one of them has gone back to PC and every one of them thanks me for talking them into making the switch ...

So, in summary ... MACS RULE - PCS DROOL!

Mac!

Like Leela it took me ages to upgrade my computer, I had Boris for 7 years before I got my new one, and I still use Boris for half my work.

I've never had a virus, and I love my Macs.

Also, they're so pretty.

I think they both have a purpose, it really comes down to what need you have.

For me, I love Macs, I think they are extremely intuitive - user friendly, easy to use and great for non-tech savvy type people, really well built, great quality and pretty much up there now when it comes to compatibility.

But from an IT front, I still need to use a PC, all my clients use pc's, most people program their applications for PC and the majority of us were brought up on PC's and know them inside out. PCs are cheaper, easier to get support for and are very flexible when it comes to hardware requirements.

So if you are after a robust, long last computer that can do things easily, works out of the box and doesn't need much tweaking or support.. but can cost you more and may not be as friendly with non standard type computing use (CAD, programming, IT networking..) then go for a MAC!

If you need something cheap, that can do everything, can be customized to your needs, needs tweaking and constant support that is easily found everywhere, or have some custom applications that you need to run, then a PC is the go!

Hmmm I would have to say Macs for graphics, but I still prefer PC 90% of the time.

I have heard that with the new mac OS running on intel dual cores, that there may be a possibility with running a dual boot scenario with a few tweaks.

I havent heard much about it, but I am hoping it will work...

Mac's by far!

I only bought a new macbook last week and I haven't been able to leave it alone! It is so much simpler and easy to use with no hassles or constant security warnings...

So far so GREAT!

Mike that says it all "I havn't been able to leave it alone" that's because its a marvel...

people sit and check out the stuff and go wow...

I still marvel at mine and its an old G4 while others are buying spyware, I am using mine and having less hassles.

while others are losing files mine seem to be intact... for years.

A Signwriter I went to a while back could not find my file, oh that was on the old computer... we lost all of our files on that one...

Sure all systems have their quirks and challenges but the mac for being able to keep on keeping on when it counts, that's for me.

Okay ... the entry point MacBook (which I run my entire business from) is $1,500.

How is that 'more' than a PC? ESPECIALLY when you take into account that if you leave the hardware completely unmodified it will last around three times as long. As Steve points out, Apple has a level of reliability that PCs just can't match.

You can get CAD for Mac and I've never had an issue with networks ... you ARE right about programming, however - if you need to program stuff, you need a PC.

I don't think there are any tweaks required. Apple is releasing 'Bootcamp' which is a windows simulation and YES - it will allow you to boot straight into windows ... WHY anyone would want to run Windows on their beautiful Mac is beyond me (to the point that I would actually call it sacrilege) but each to their own.

To be fair, I currently run Parallels on my Mac because there has been one or two educational software programs I've needed to run that haven't been Mac compatible. It's good to have that back up ... but Parallels runs pretty poorly on my MacBook (I'd be interested to know how it runs on a MacBook Pro ... guessing it would be better). From what I hear, Bootcamp will fix these problems and it will be just like using native windows.

wow, you all have just made my choice alot easier.
My IT husband is big on MACS but I was never really sure, I am a big stick with what works.
I recently (December) bought and ACER laptop and well it sucks.
Its already been back to the factory for almost 2 weeks and it still has problems, I'm hoping for a full refund (credit) to get a brand newie. I will have about 1500.00 to spend.
I have had sooo many problems with PC's over the last year or so and just want it all to be over. Sounds like MAC is the go.
Thanks :D

*shudder*

It makes me cringe, really. I just don't get it. I'd rather not use the Windows only software than do that to my Macs!
